Data sources and methodology
This dataset tracks the estimated cost of a typical household's monthly grocery basket from 2015 to 2025 across multiple global currencies. The 2015 starting values are tied to original exchange-rate conversions, while the year-over-year progression follows regional Food Consumer Price Index trends rather than flat currency conversions.
The data integrates official benchmarks, such as the UK Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages CPI reaching an index level of 144.00 by late 2025, representing a forty-four percent increase from 2015, and flattens China's curve to match its recorded zero percent annual CPI inflation rate for 2025. Intermediate years from 2016 through 2024 are mathematically modeled to reflect verifiable macroeconomic trends, including the global grocery-price acceleration experienced between 2022 and 2024.
Historical Bitcoin spot prices are sourced from CoinGecko, and gold pricing comes from Gold-API. This serves as a realistic visualization dataset rather than a production financial feed, with interpolated arrays intended for eventual transition to a live historical CPI API.
Please note that these figures are for general informational and visualization purposes only, and actual grocery costs will vary significantly depending on household size, specific retailers, and regional geography.
FAQ
Questions people ask
Why compare a grocery basket in Bitcoin?
Bitcoin shows the amount needed for the same illustrative basket, separating Bitcoin-denominated purchasing power from a currency price. It does not make the basket universal or remove local differences in food costs.
How representative is the grocery basket?
The 2015-2025 series is an illustrative global benchmark based on food-price trends, not a local receipt. Household size, diet, retailer, region and taxes can make your actual basket very different.
Why do fiat, Bitcoin and gold basket costs diverge?
The basket is converted using changing exchange rates and asset prices, so each unit moves for different reasons. Bitcoin and gold volatility can dominate the comparison over short periods, while the underlying basket is only an estimate.
